THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
Episode 70
The air in the condo was
still and heavy with the
scent of cedar incense.
Minnie was meticulously
sorting through a stack
of old legal documents.
"The final release from
the trust came today,"
she said without looking
at the door as it swung.
Robert walked in, his
boots dusty from the
foundry's gravel lot.
He felt lighter than he
had in forty-five years.
"Burn them, Minnie," he
said, sitting at the bar.
"We don't need the proof
of what we surrendered."
A sudden, sharp knock at
the door broke the calm.
It wasn't the rhythmic
tap of Dave or the girls.
It was a heavy, official
sound that rang out.
Robert stood up, his
Marine training kicking
into his tired muscles.
He opened the door to a
young man in a uniform.
"Delivery for Boom Lake,"
the messenger said,
handing over a crate.
It wasn't from a bank or
a lawyer in New York.
It was a shipment of
iron parts from the
folding container plant.
James had sent the first
hinges for the project.
They were cold, heavy,
and real in Robert's hand.
Virginia and Dorothy
came into the kitchen.
"Is it starting?" Dorothy
asked, touching the iron.
"The industrial line is
moving at last," he said.
The saga was shifting
from the soul to the
world of heavy steel.
Shirley opened Photoshop
to document the arrival.
She snapped a photo of
the raw metal on the
white kitchen counter.
"It looks honest," she
said, adjusting the tint.
"It looks like progress."
Barbara called from the
road near the border.
"The warehouse is full."
"The first units are
ready for the shipping."
The Towers were no longer
selling paper or ideas.
They were selling a
product made of grit.
Minnie threw the legal
papers into the small
living room fireplace.
The flames turned blue
as the ink began to curl.
The past was a pile of
ash on the hearth.
The future was the sound
of the foundry's heart.
Robert looked at his
family in the firelight.
They were ready for the
next hundred episodes.
The Arizona night was
silent and very deep.
The Towers stood firm.
The work was the way.
