THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
Episode 77
The first light of dawn
was a thin, violet line
across the canyon rim.
Robert sat on the metal
step of the library, the
iron hinge cool against
the small of his back.
Minnie brought out two
mugs of steaming coffee,
the ceramic clicking softly
against the steel frame.
"The girls are asleep in
the reading corner," she
said, her eyes weary.
"They look like they did
when they were children."
Robert took a slow sip,
feeling the warmth spread.
"The man from the FDC...
he hasn't changed, Min."
"He still thinks the world
is a grid to be solved."
Minnie sat beside him on
the cold threshold.
"He doesn't understand that
you can't map a family."
A truck rumbled in the
distance, but it wasn't
a black sedan this time.
It was Dave Martinez,
pulling a trailer loaded
with solar panels and wire.
"Heard you had a bit of
a light show last night,"
Dave said, jumping down.
"The Ridge doesn't like
uninvited guests, Rob."
Robert stood up, his
joints popping in the air.
"We need to power this
place up, Dave."
"If they want to use the
dark to scare us, we'll
turn the whole canyon
into a beacon of light."
Virginia and Barbara
emerged from the unit,
blinking at the bright sky.
"I’m calling the county,"
Barbara said, her phone
already in her hand.
"We’re making this site
an official landmark."
"Visibility is our best
defense against shadows."
The radical honesty was
becoming a public shield.
They weren't hiding behind
fences or gated walls.
They were inviting the
world to see the work.
Shirley and Dorothy began
unrolling the solar film
across the flat roof.
The saga was moving from
the defense to the sun.
The Towers were no longer
haunted by the old sky.
They were capturing it
to light the way home.
Robert looked at the
blueprints for the next
three folding units.
They weren't just books;
they were the future.
The Arizona heat began
to rise from the gravel.
The air was very sharp.
The peace was being won.
The family was a wall.
