THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
        Episode 80
The wind through the canyon
played a low, hollow note
against the solar racks.
Robert stood by the battery
housing, checking the heat
levels on the new sensors.
Everything was holding steady
in the late afternoon sun.
Minnie came out with a tray
of sliced oranges and nuts.
"The bikers are still in
the reading room," she said,
nodding toward the unit.
"They’re arguing over the
schematics for the shop."
Robert wiped his forehead
with a faded blue kerchief.
"That’s a good sound, Min."
"Better than the silence
of a legal deposition."
Suddenly, Virginia walked out
with a look of confusion.
"Dad, someone just dropped
a package at the trailhead."
"It’s addressed to the FDC
Radio Operator—Personal."
Robert felt a sharp jolt
in the center of his chest.
He walked down the gravel
path to the edge of the rim.
A small, wooden box sat on
the flat surface of a rock.
There was no return address.
He pried the lid open with
a pocketknife, his hands
as steady as iron rods.
Inside, resting on a bed
of velvet, was an old brass
telegraph key from the war.
It was a relic of the era
his father had served in.
"It’s a message," Robert
said, his voice a whisper.
"Someone is calling out
from the deep archives."
Dorothy and Shirley joined
him, their faces worried.
"Is it another threat, Dad?"
Shirley asked, her camera
ready to document the box.
Robert shook his head as
he traced the brass arm.
"No, it’s an invitation."
"Someone wants to talk
without the drones or the
black cars or the suits."
The radical honesty was
leading them into a past
that was older than debt.
It was about the duty to
the transmission of truth.
Minnie stood behind him,
her hand on his shoulder.
"Are you going to answer?"
Robert looked at the key
and then at the library.
"I’m going to use the sun
to power the response."
The Towers were more than
a name on a warehouse.
They were the keepers of
the long-distance signal.
The Arizona sky turned a
fiery, defiant crimson.
The air was very expectant.
The message was being sent.
The family was the anchor.
