THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
Episode 96
The storm broke as fast
as it had arrived, leaving
the canyon air smelling
of wet creosote and earth.
The deputy stood at the
edge of the deck, his
uniform damp but his
expression profoundly changed.
"I’ve spent ten years
patrolling this valley,"
he said, looking at the
sturdy iron township.
"I never thought I’d see
a village rise out of
the rock in a month."
Robert handed him a
final cup of coffee.
"We didn't build it to
be a miracle, Deputy."
"We built it to be a
solid place to stand."
Minnie was already out
in the garden, checking
the rows for washouts.
"The drainage held," she
shouted, her voice bright.
"The folding units acted
like a dam for the soil."
Virginia and Barbara were
re-tensioning the cables
on the solar array, their
hands moving in rhythm.
The radical honesty was
now a physical structure
that had survived its
first baptism of water.
The deputy climbed back
into his truck, nodding
to the "Boom Lake" logo.
"I have to file a report."
"I’ll make sure they know
this isn't a squatters'
camp or a militia cell."
"This is a community."
Robert watched the tail
lights disappear down
the muddy trail.
The saga was moving into
the light of legitimacy.
The Towers weren't just
a family with a secret.
They were the pioneers
of a new Arizona law.
Shirley and Dorothy were
updating the digital log,
marking the storm's data.
"The iron didn't flinch,"
Shirley said, tapping
the steel wall of the unit.
Robert felt the weight of
the telegraph key in his
pocket, cold and heavy.
The next signal wouldn't
be in code; it would be
in the actions they took.
Minnie walked up and
leaned against his side.
The Arizona moon was
a silver sliver in the
clearing, midnight sky.
The family was the rock.
The work was the truth.
The peace was the prize.
